The latter training involves an internship and attendance in an approved psychiatric residency program. Generally the residency program is three years unless the individual elects to have a residency in child psychiatry. In that case, an additional year i.e., a Child Fellowship is necessary. This involves work with children and/or families. Psychiatrists train in different settings, including mental health centers, state hospitals, in a general hospital that has psychiatric services, private mental hospitals, etc. During their training, the psychiatrist is exposed to a number of modalities, in the treatment of individuals, families and groups, including psychopharmacology, different therapeutic schools of thought relative to treatment, and hypnotherapy. In addition, they are exposed to the use of electroconvulsive treatment (ECT). Psychiatrists are either board-eligible or board certified. Board certification indicates that the psychiatrist has taken both the written and oral parts of an examination of the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology of the American Medical Association. An individual is eligible to the board two years post his or her graduation from their residency program. However, the majority of psychiatrists, in this country are board eligible rather than board certified. They are able to practice in the same manner, including prescribing medications, see persons on an individual, family and group basis, etc. A child psychiatrist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood disorders. In order to be board-certified in child psychiatry, a five-year residency must be completed, including at least two years of supervised clinical experience with children, family and groups. The type of practice of the individual psychiatrist depends upon his or her prior experience and/or interest. Most psychiatrists have a general psychiatric practice but may see predominantly individuals with eating disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse problems, etc. |
