Clinical social work is the application of theoretical knowledge of personality development and human behavior through the use of distinctive skills to assess, diagnose and treat mental disorders and maladaptive behaviors.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers have completed a two-year graduate program in Social Work that includes a two-year internship in an agency setting. After an additional two years of post degree work experience, under the supervision of a licensed Clinician, the individual is eligible to take a state licensing examination administrated by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners.  This license, L.C.S.W., allows the clinical social worker to deliver direct clinical social work services as an independent practitioner without the need for supervision.

Board Certified Diplomat (B.C.D.), the highest professional credential, is attained by examination through the National Association of Social Workers or the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work.

Clinicians provide intervention for the treatment of mental health disorders, maladaptive functioning and crisis/stress management. Practice specialization can include clinical services to children, adolescents, adults, families and couples. Practice methods commonly used are individual psychotherapy, group therapy, couple and family therapy as well as parent-child issues.
